Natalia Cacchiarelli

I am a painter. I paint. Repetition, obsession, extreme precision, symmetry—these are constants I always bring to my work. I describe what I do as obsessive geometry.

My artistic journey commences with a precise stroke from a 0.5 mm pencil, each line meticulously etched into existence.
To ensure precision and scale, I commission bespoke long rulers, crafted to my exact specifications, enabling me to render my creations with unparalleled accuracy and finesse.

Natalia Cacchiarelli was born in Bahía Blanca, Argentina in 1971. She trained as a National Professor of Painting and Drawing at the Prilidiano Pueyrredon School; at the same time, she collaborated with Tulio de Sagastizabal, Graciela Hasper, Juan Doffo, and Adolfo Nigro. Upon completion in 1997, she studied with Pablo Siquier. Throughout the nineties, she was also part of the group ¢ (Cero Barrado), with whom she exhibited in off-the-beaten-path spaces such as Espacio Giesso and the Arte x Arte gallery.

Since 1994, she has held individual exhibitions in institutions and museums. She participated in several shows at the Museo Cultural Recoleta, Galeria Del Paseo, Elsi del Rio, Palatina, the Rojas Cultural Center, Smart Gallery BA, The Mission Projects Gallery in Chicago, and La Caja de Extremadura at the Exhibition Hall in Cáceres.

She won prizes at the University of Salvador in 2001 and from the Klemm Foundation in 1999, having the previous year received a Special Jury Mention at the Regional Art Biennial of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Bahía Blanca, Argentina. She received the same award from the Palais de Glace Award for New Painters in 1999 and the Stimulus Award from the Bank of the Province of Buenos Aires in 2006.

Between 2000 and 2017, she participated in ArteBA with the gallery Del Infinito and Galería Del Paseo. Since 2018, together with Smart Gallery BA, she has attended PArC Lima and Scope Miami. In 2020, she participated in the virtual edition of SWAB Barcelona. She has participated in around five group exhibitions annually in Argentina, the United States, Peru, Costa Rica, Uruguay, and Spain for the last twenty years.

My work is sentimentally and formally linked to my youth training. I studied art at the Prilidiano Pueyrredón National School during the nineties. Since then, the uncertainty about what it means to be an artist and how to be one is another tool for me.

I work with acrylic on fabric and watercolor on paper. I tend to be traditional with technique. I always draw with a 0.5 pencil. I prefer large canvases and long rulers that I have specially made.

Teachers, colleagues, and friends have influenced me. Through them, I put together the working method I have used for years. From Adolfo Nigro I learned to always be in the workshop, painting or not: being there, reading, watering the plants, living everyday life in my workspace. From Pablo Siquier, I learned a lot about technique and specific tools to perfect my geometric obsession and make increasingly virtuous works. Sometimes, I dialogue in my imagination with artists I admire: Sol Lewit, Imi Knoebel, Ad Reinhart, and Tomma Abts.

I am a painter; I paint. There are constants in the works that I have always carried with me; repetition, obsession, extreme prolixity, precision, symmetry. I call what I do obsessive geometry. In the new works, I began to add more informal or expressionist areas to try with the disorder and the anxiety of not knowing how it would look. That uncertainty is very seductive for me, since I spent years working on series that I controlled more.
