Lorenzo Taini

Lorenzo Taini's style of creation reflects the canvas space he is confined to work with. The small space produces images and perceptions that immediately synthesize their meanings. His work revolves around a concept of repetition; in the repetition of a sign, does repetition prevail, or do the characteristics of the sign prevail?

Lorenzo Taini is a visual artist that makes paintings, installations and works on paper. Lorenzo is from Sassocorvaro, Italy, but currently lives and works as an Art teacher in Milan. He studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera and studied with artists such as Grazia Varisco, Carla Accardi, Gianfranco Zappettini and Claudio Olivieri. When Lorenzo works on canvas he uses acrylic paint, natural pigments, cotton threads and sand. When he works on paper he employs watercolors, cotton threads and markers. In his installations, however, he takes objects of everyday life, objects that hang on the wall with nails, multiplying them in a “Hanging Repetition”.

I’m convinced that the “reason” of everything I produce lives in the space in which my work has confined. The limited space produces a gathering of images, of sensations, of immediately comparable perceptions, that translate into a synthesis of meanings. My work revolves around a concept: the repetition. In the repetition of a sign, does repetition prevail or do the characteristics of the sign prevail? Hume taught us that repetition doesn’t alter what is being repeated but changes something in whoever observes the repetition.

What interests me is ordering in series, creating sequences that have continuity and persistence. I do it lightly, avoiding accumulation and turning repetition into extension.

The canvases are painted by stratification, daily craftsmanship, and simple gestures that combine and compose different materials. Gestures that repeat themselves translate into lines and signs, seams and points, with no goal other than measuring the infinity of repetition.

My repetition shows us how the interpretation of big themes, such as the concepts of time and space, can be suspended, made temporary, and undefined by the same difference that repetition produces.

I call some of these paintings “Punishment” to amplify the sense of fatigue they require and the energy the repetition of a simple gesture can produce.
